IJ Start Canon Set Up for Canon Pixma, i-SENSYS, MAXIFY, CanoScan, SELPHY, Laser Shot Printer Setup Drivers Windows, Mac, and Linux

Canon PIXMA G4100 Driver Download

June 18, 2026 by Cannon IJ

IJ Start Cannon– I’ll be honest with you — I spent almost two hours on what should’ve been a 10-minute setup. My G4100 was sitting right there on the desk, plugged in, power light blinking, and I couldn’t get a single page to print. Kept telling me the printer was “offline.” Drove me absolutely crazy.

Canon PIXMA G4100 Drivers Download

Turned out the issue was the Canon PIXMA G4100 driver. Or more accurately — me downloading the wrong one from a random website and not realizing it until way too late.

So that’s why I’m writing this. Not to just repeat the steps from Canon’s support page. But to tell you what I actually wish I’d known going in — the gotchas, the weird little problems that don’t show up in the manual, and the stuff that makes this whole process a lot less painful.

First Things First — What Is a Driver and Why Does It Matter?

Okay bear with me here because I know “what is a driver” sounds like a question from 2003. But I’m including this because understanding it actually helps you troubleshoot when things go wrong. And things do go wrong.

Your printer and your computer are kind of strangers. They don’t naturally know how to talk to each other. The driver is what introduces them — it tells your computer “hey, this is a Canon PIXMA G4100, here’s how to send it print jobs, here’s what it can do.” Without that introduction, your computer either ignores the printer completely or sort of recognizes it exists but can’t actually do anything with it.

  • Canon PIXMA TS8052 Driver

That second situation is weirdly common and weirdly confusing. The printer shows up in your devices list. Windows sees it. But nothing prints and you have no idea why.

That was me. For nearly two hours.

Once I installed the proper Canon PIXMA G4100 driver — the real one, from the right place — it printed on the first try. No settings changed, nothing else different. Just the driver.

Is This Printer Even Worth the Hassle?

Since you’re here dealing with driver stuff, you might be wondering if the G4100 is worth the trouble at all. Fair question.

Short answer: yeah, I think it is. Especially if you print a lot.

The big thing about this printer — the reason people buy it — is the ink tank system. No cartridges. You just refill the tanks directly with ink bottles, and those bottles last a really long time. Canon claims thousands of pages per bottle and honestly that tracks with my experience. I’ve had mine for a while now and I’ve only refilled it once. Ink costs on regular cartridge printers add up fast and it gets annoying. This one basically solves that problem.

  • Canon PIXMA MX328 Driver

It also scans and copies, so if you need an all-in-one for home or a small office, it covers everything.

Where it’s not great: speed. It’s just… not fast. Medium-speed at best. I printed a 30-page document once and made a cup of tea while I waited. If you’re in a rush, it’ll test your patience. But for regular daily printing? You stop noticing after a while.

Where to Download the Canon PIXMA G4100 Driver (Please Read This Part)

This is where I went wrong and where I see other people go wrong all the time, so I’m going to be really clear here.

Do not just Google “Canon PIXMA G4100 driver download” and click the first thing.

I know it seems obvious. But those top results are often third-party driver sites — not Canon, not affiliated with Canon — and they package extra software into the download. Sometimes it’s just bloatware. Sometimes it’s worse. Either way you don’t want it.

Go directly to canon.com. Find the support section, search for PIXMA G4100, pick your operating system, and download from there. That’s the only safe option.

The official page has drivers for:

  • Windows — Windows 10 and 11 work great, Windows 7/8 are trickier but options exist
  • macOS — recent versions are well covered
  • Linux — there’s limited support, but it’s there if you need it

One thing I’ll add that I learned the hard way: before you download, check what version of Windows you’re running — specifically whether it’s 32-bit or 64-bit. Right-click on “This PC,” hit Properties, and it’ll tell you. Downloading the wrong architecture version means the driver won’t install properly and you’ll have no idea why.

How to Actually Install It

Alright, you’ve got the file. Here’s what happens next.

On Windows it’s pretty simple in theory. You open the .exe installer, follow the wizard, and at some point it’ll ask you to connect the printer — either plug in via USB or connect to Wi-Fi when it tells you to. Let it finish, restart, done.

In practice the step that confuses people most is the connection part. The installer is weirdly specific about when it wants you to plug in the printer. Too early and it might not recognize it properly. Too late and the setup stalls. My advice: just wait until it explicitly asks before you connect anything.

On Mac you’ll get a .dmg file. Open it, run the package installer inside, go through the steps.

Both installs are wizard-guided so they’re not as scary as they sound. The real problems come after, which is what the next section is for.

The Problems Nobody Warns You About

Look, sometimes the install just works and you’re done. But sometimes it doesn’t, and when it doesn’t, it’s confusing. Here’s what I’ve run into and what actually fixed it.

Printer not detected during setup

If it’s not finding the printer over Wi-Fi, grab a USB cable and connect it directly just for the installation. I know that feels like cheating somehow but it works. Once the driver’s properly installed you can disconnect the cable and switch to wireless no problem.

“Driver Unavailable” error in Windows

This one usually means there’s an old driver conflicting with the new one — maybe from a previous install attempt. Open Device Manager, find the printer, right-click it, hit “Uninstall device,” and then run the installer again from scratch. Annoying extra step but it genuinely works.

Scanner does nothing even though printing is fine

The G4100 prints and scans, but here’s the thing — the scanning side sometimes needs a separate piece of software called IJ Scan Utility. It comes with Canon’s full driver package but if you downloaded a stripped-down version, you might be missing it. Head back to Canon’s site and download the complete software bundle this time, not just the basic driver.

Print quality is off after reinstalling

If your prints look streaky or off-color right after a reinstall, don’t panic. Run the cleaning and print head alignment tools — on Windows they’re inside Canon Utilities → My Printer. Takes about three minutes and it’s usually enough to sort things out.

Should You Keep the Driver Updated?

My honest answer is: update it when you have a reason to, not just for the sake of it.

Canon does push occasional updates, usually to fix compatibility issues after Windows or macOS updates something. So if you just installed a big system update and your printer starts acting weird — yeah, check for a new driver version. That’s often the culprit.

But if everything’s working normally? Leave it. I’ve literally caused problems by updating drivers that were perfectly happy. One time the print quality got worse after an update and I spent a weekend figuring out why. Just leave a working setup alone.

Real Talk: What I Like and What Irritates Me

Since we’re being honest throughout this whole thing, here’s my genuine take on the driver experience specifically.

It’s actually one of the smoother Canon installs I’ve done. The wizard is clear, it doesn’t dump 47 different apps on your computer, and the official support page is easy to find the right version on. Those things sound basic but plenty of printer manufacturers get them wrong.

What bugs me: the scan software looks ancient. It works, but the interface looks like something from Windows XP. Also the full software package is pretty big — we’re not talking a small download. And if you’re on an older version of Windows, finding the right compatible driver takes more clicking around than it should.

Not dealbreakers. But you asked for honest, so there you go.

Small Things That’ll Save You a Headache

A few tips that aren’t obvious:

  • Know your Wi-Fi password before you start. The wireless setup asks for it and scrambling to find it mid-install is genuinely annoying.
  • Turn off your antivirus temporarily if the installer keeps getting blocked or flagged. Some antivirus software gets weird about printer drivers.
  • Keep the downloaded driver file somewhere you can find it later. You’ll need to reinstall if you get a new computer or do a fresh Windows install, and having the file saves you a trip back to Canon’s site.
  • The driver doesn’t transfer between computers automatically. New machine means fresh install.

That’s Pretty Much It

Getting the Canon PIXMA G4100 driver sorted isn’t complicated once you know where to get it and what to watch out for. Official Canon website, right version for your OS, follow the wizard, handle any weird errors with the fixes above.

The printer’s genuinely solid once it’s set up. The ink situation alone makes it worth it if you print with any regularity. And now you’re going in knowing what I didn’t know the first time — which, trust me, makes a real difference.

Good luck. You’ll probably be fine. And if you’re not, at least you know where to look.
