Design and Build

This printer is a large, black device with too much glossy plastic, which easily gets smudged with fingerprints.The ADF tray folds out at a steep angle, designed to support the duplex paper path.

Control Panel

The control panel is unique, featuring 16 unmarked buttons. Canon uses LED backlights to give each button two different functions. This is similar to some PIXMA MG models but uses physical push buttons instead of a full touch panel.

In one mode, the buttons act as navigation keys for the 75mm LCD screen. When fax mode is selected, the same buttons switch to a numeric keypad. There are also four large buttons for copy, fax, scan, and photo functions, plus start and stop buttons for tasks.

Paper Handling

The front panel folds down to become an output tray, with a 150-sheet paper tray below. There’s another rear tray that can hold plain or photo paper.

A curved cover on the right side hides memory card slots, supporting most common types. Below, a USB/PictBridge port allows direct printing from cameras. At the back, there are ports for USB and Ethernet, but the printer also supports Wi-Fi with WPS setup via passcode.

Ink System and Software

The printer uses five ink cartridges, which clip into a semi-permanent printhead. Each cartridge has a red LED to indicate proper installation and flashes when ink is low.

Canon includes its standard software, which covers scanning, OCR, and printing for both Windows and macOS.

Print Speed and Performance

Canon claims speeds of 12.5ppm (black) and 9.3ppm (color). However, printing often takes extra time before starting. A five-page text document took 1min 26secs, including a 59-second delay before printing began.

A more typical speed is 4.7ppm, improving to 7.9ppm in draft mode and 9.6ppm for 20 pages in normal quality. Duplex printing is slow, producing 2.9 sides per minute.

Copying is faster, with a single color page taking 22 seconds, while a five-page text document finished in 57 seconds. Duplex copying takes longer, with 10 sides needing 4 minutes 19 seconds. Photo printing is quicker, with a 15x10cm photo taking 33 seconds in standard mode.

Print Quality

The PIXMA MX885 delivers good quality prints, though some text has slight ink spatter around edges. Colors appear rich but are slightly less vibrant than some competitors. Color copies are highly accurate, with minimal color shift from the original.

Photo prints are excellent, as expected from Canon. Colors appear natural with sharp details. Both light and dark areas are well defined, maintaining photo quality even in this office-focused printer.

Running Costs

Printing costs depend on ink cartridge prices. The printer uses two black inks (one for text, one for photos). Based on ISO calculations, a black print costs 3.9p per page, while a color page costs 9.9p, including 0.7p for paper. These costs are competitive with similar inkjet all-in-ones.
