IJ Start Canon G3010

Setting up a new printer should be easy. But somehow, it can turn into a small headache when you don’t know where to start.

If you have a Canon PIXMA G3010, you will probably come across IJ Start Canon G3010 when looking for the driver and setup instructions.

I’ve used quite a few printers over the years, and honestly, the first setup is usually the part I like the least. There are cables, drivers, Wi-Fi settings, and sometimes a few messages on the screen that aren’t very helpful.

The good news is that the G3010 isn’t particularly difficult. Once you get through the initial setup, everyday printing is pretty straightforward.

What Is IJ Start Canon G3010?

IJ Start Canon G3010 is basically the starting point for setting up your Canon PIXMA G3010.

It can:

  • Print documents and photos
  • Scan documents
  • Make copies
  • Connect to a computer
  • Connect through Wi-Fi

The exact setup screens can be a little different depending on whether you’re using Windows or macOS. Still, the basic process is much the same.

If you’re setting up the G3010 for the first time, don’t rush through it. Taking an extra few minutes at the beginning can save you from troubleshooting later.

Canon PIXMA G3010 Setup Before You Start

Before starting the IJ Start Canon G3010 setup, I like to get everything ready first.

It sounds obvious, but it makes the whole process much smoother.

You’ll need:

  • Canon PIXMA G3010 printer
  • Power cable
  • USB cable, if you’re using USB
  • Canon ink bottles
  • Windows or Mac computer
  • Wi-Fi connection for wireless printing

Give the printer a little room on your desk, too. Don’t squeeze it between two other things.

You’ll need to open the ink tank area and load paper, so having some space around the printer is helpful.

Before turning it on, remove all the orange tape, plastic, and other packing material. There can be more of it than you expect.

Filling the Canon G3010 Ink Tanks

This is one of the things I actually like about the G3010.

Instead of replacing small ink cartridges all the time, you refill the built-in ink tanks. You can also see the ink level through the tanks, which is convenient.

The printer uses four colors:

  • Black
  • Cyan
  • Magenta
  • Yellow

Be careful here. Make sure each bottle goes into the correct tank.

I know it sounds like common sense, but this is one of those mistakes that can become a very unpleasant problem if you aren’t paying attention.

Also, don’t try to fill the tanks past the recommended level. Ink is messy, and cleaning spilled printer ink is not something I’d recommend doing for fun.

IJ Start Canon G3010 Driver Installation

Once the printer is physically ready, you’ll need the correct driver.

The driver is what lets your computer communicate with the G3010. Without it, connecting the printer doesn’t necessarily mean you can actually print.

For the IJ Start Canon G3010 setup, choose the driver for your operating system.

Check whether your computer is running:

  • Windows 10
  • Windows 11
  • macOS
  • Another supported system

I strongly recommend getting the driver from Canon rather than downloading one from a random driver website.

There are plenty of websites that offer printer drivers, but some make the process unnecessarily complicated. You may end up downloading extra software you don’t need.

Once the Canon installer opens, just follow the instructions.

It will normally guide you through the connection and printer setup. Nothing too complicated.

Connecting Canon G3010 With USB

If you want the simplest possible connection, USB is a good place to start.

Connect the USB cable between the G3010 and your computer when the setup program asks for it.

The computer should then detect the printer and install the necessary software.

Personally, I like using USB during the first setup because there are fewer things to troubleshoot. You don’t have to worry about Wi-Fi passwords or whether the printer can find the router.

It’s also a useful test.

If the G3010 prints perfectly through USB but doesn’t work over Wi-Fi, you know the printer itself is probably fine. The problem is more likely related to the wireless connection.

Setting Up Canon G3010 Wi-Fi

The wireless feature is handy if more than one computer or phone needs to use the printer.

You don’t have to keep the printer right beside your computer, which is a nice little convenience.

During the IJ Start Canon G3010 wireless setup, make sure the computer and printer are connected to the correct Wi-Fi network.

For the first setup, I would keep the printer fairly close to the router. Once everything works, you can move it to another location if the signal is strong enough.

Wi-Fi printer problems can be annoying because the printer isn’t always the real problem.

Sometimes it’s the router. Sometimes it’s the computer. And sometimes, for whatever reason, restarting everything fixes it.

If Wi-Fi doesn’t work, try these first:

  • Restart the printer
  • Restart the Wi-Fi router
  • Restart your computer
  • Check the Wi-Fi password
  • Make sure you’re using the correct network
  • Move the printer closer to the router

Simple, but worth trying before doing anything more complicated.

Scanning With the Canon G3010

The G3010 also has a flatbed scanner, which is useful for everyday jobs.

I’ve found this handy for scanning:

  • Documents
  • Receipts
  • Forms
  • School papers
  • Photos
  • Small business paperwork

Put the document on the scanner glass, open the Canon scanning software, and choose your preferred settings.

For normal documents, you don’t need an extremely high resolution. A moderate setting is usually more than enough.

Photos are a little different. If you’re scanning old photos or pictures you want to keep, using a higher resolution makes more sense.

Canon G3010 Print Quality

For everyday documents, the G3010 does a good job.

Black text is generally sharp enough for letters, invoices, school work, and other normal printing.

Color printing is also quite decent for everyday use.

I wouldn’t buy this printer specifically as a professional photo printer, though. That’s not really what it’s designed for.

Paper also makes a bigger difference than many people realize.

Cheap paper can make even a good printer look worse. If you want better-looking color prints, try using decent-quality paper.

What I Like About the Canon G3010

There are several things I like about this printer.

The biggest one is obviously the refillable ink system.

If you print frequently, buying ink bottles can be much more convenient than constantly replacing cartridges.

Other positives include:

  • Refillable ink tanks
  • Easy-to-see ink levels
  • Print, scan, and copy functions
  • Wireless printing
  • Good everyday document quality
  • Relatively low running costs
  • Suitable for home and small-office use

I also like being able to see how much ink is left.

With some cartridge printers, you suddenly get a warning and have to guess how much ink is actually remaining. The visible tanks on the G3010 are much easier to understand.

Things I Don’t Like About the Canon G3010

Of course, it isn’t perfect.

The G3010 is not a particularly fast printer. If you regularly print large documents, you’ll notice that.

The initial setup can also feel a little confusing if you’re not familiar with printer drivers and wireless connections.

A few things I would keep in mind:

  • Printing speed is fairly average
  • Wi-Fi setup can sometimes be frustrating
  • It takes a decent amount of desk space
  • Photo quality isn’t aimed at professional users
  • Ink can dry or the print head can clog if the printer sits unused for too long

That last one is important.

If you only print once every few months, you may have more maintenance issues. I prefer using an ink tank printer regularly, even if it’s just for a few pages.

Is the Canon G3010 Still Worth Using?

For home users and small businesses, I think the G3010 is still a practical choice.

It’s not the fastest printer and it doesn’t have all the fancy features of newer, more expensive models.

But that’s not necessarily a problem.

The important part is that you get:

  • Printing
  • Scanning
  • Copying
  • Wireless connectivity
  • Refillable ink tanks

And if you print regularly, the low-cost ink system is probably the biggest reason to consider it.

For someone printing school assignments, invoices, forms, receipts, and general documents, the G3010 can do the job without making things unnecessarily complicated.

Final Thoughts on IJ Start Canon G3010

Getting started with the IJ Start Canon G3010 setup isn’t as difficult as it might seem.

Fill the ink carefully, install the correct driver, connect the printer, and test it before you start printing important documents.

Once everything is working, the G3010 is pretty easy to live with.

It’s not perfect. The speed could be better, and Wi-Fi setup can occasionally be annoying. But the refillable ink tanks are a big advantage if you print regularly.

Personally, that’s what makes the G3010 interesting. It isn’t trying to be an expensive, high-end printer. It simply gives you the basic features most people need, while keeping ink costs reasonably low.
